Do you want to be stranded in the snow with no heat?

I know exactly what it means.

I meant what do you define as "daily" for that car? once a week? sure.
once a day? as others have said, have AAA on speed dail and another car to get to work :P

Good price for that car. They suck in winter, though. Title would make me ask more questions. I have an extra can of Lucas wiring smoke you can have. Seriously, not a bad car, good price and not that unreliable once you find the bugs and fix them.

I DD'd a 76 Alfa Spider for 1 year. After I bought it it spent about a month in the shop (~6k) and then 3 months ago I had a service done on it (~1k) and took it on en epic road trip where it finally broke to the point where I can't fix it (even thought it'd be a simple fix... long story).

Basically what I'm trying to tell you is that when it's working it'll be the most exhilarating feeling. But you'll always be stressing about it. And when it breaks it'll be frustrating. Plus, I assume you live in Denver and while sliding sideways everwhere in the snow will be fun (and driving with the top down int he freezing cold confuses the HELL out of people. Great fun, that) the road salt will destroy it.

SO, if you can walk/bike/light rial/bus to school/work (and you'd better have a job or a trust fund to pay for parts) and have an area where you feel comfortable working on it (not just changing the oil but doing bigger job such as rewiring (hello Lucas!) or brakes or head gasket, etc...) and only drive it in the summer then I say:

YOLO!

If not, wait until you are in the position to have two cars and indoor storage for the classic.

I think I may have to wait until I can have more than one car. I must have an MG in my lifetime though. Preferably an MGB. My initials are MBG, I would love to confuse the hell out of non-car people saying that I had the car made custom for me including the logo. lol

I "need" an MG as well at some point, though I can't decide between a TC/D/F or an MGA. Or and MGBGTV8 (cuz its fun to say and, well, V8. duh.) Though the list of cars I "need" to own is quite long.

I also "need" a Plymouth superbird, a 1970 dodge challenger 440/6 and any AMC. it's the scurge of the automotive enthusiast.

Now you've gone and made me feel self-conscious about the fact that my "need" list could be an article in itself. Or not. I can never nail down the bare-bones list of cars that I "must" own. Mostly euro stuff because I don't know the American stuff as well, but still well enough to get into trouble. I'd take a '70 Plymouth Cuda 440 Six Pack as well as a Hudson Hornet with the Twin H Power 6. Also a Packard of some sort and a 7.0 litre Caddy ElDo. Oh, and a GNX. And something from the 20's, like an Oakland or perhaps a legit 40's or 50's Model A hot rod. And I can't forget a Pontiac Chieftain for the great hood ornament. I should stop before this gets out of hand.

Now I need a 34 Ford model b 5 window, a gnx, a vw bug, a vw thing and a vw bus as well. I forgot about the Volkswagens

What else did you forget about? I didn't forget about anything, I just wanted to spare you the crazy long and depressing list full of unobtainium. though I have to stop myself from getting getting the possibility of the 'need' list confused with the lust of the 'want' list. For 'need' I'd be limited to one Ferrari, the 308 GTB (or S - can't decide. Also can't decide if I want a QV or not). And one Porsche, a 911 SC. Though I could say Hello to a Ford-Lotus Cortina MK IV, Triumph Spitfire, Alfa 164, E55 AMG, E(39 or 34) M5, Pinzgauer, Volvo C303, LR Defender 110 (or S2.5/3 109), RRC 3 door, Jag Mk 2 and XJS V12, E9 Bavaria, VW Type 2, Citroen DS, SM, 2CV, H Van, Pug 404 diesel wagon, Lancia Delta, Audi Coupe Quattro, 5000CS Quattro, RR Corniche (on a budget you can only own one between services or drop in a Chevy 350). And I can't forget a Mach 1 Mustang or Trans Am with the Screaming Chicken and T Tops.

Now I'm done. I'd like to qualify that list as everything is "reasonably" obtainable. i.e. nothing over $60k (thanks Ferrari). The 'want' list is waaaaaay longer and cooler and depressing.

I would.

Sure, you'd have to learn to work on it, but they're so dead simple that there's not much to learn, and there's very little actually to go wrong. The main hardship would be that they're noisy, slow, and not very comfortable. But on the flip side, they're a huge amount of fun to drive. Unless that car is hiding serious issues, that's a really good price, too.

It would be an absolute blast to drive. But you would need to decide how important the following things are to you:

- getting to and from places

- arriving on time

- having spending money

- clothes that aren't wet

- avoiding engine fires

- avoiding electrical fires

- avoiding standing on the side of I-25 waiting for a tow truck

If those things aren't priorities, then go for it. If they are priorities, then go for it but also buy a second car for backup.

I have a '72 Midget, have had it for years, so I know of what I speak...

How much drive in your daily drive? By modern standards these cars are absurdly tiny and incredibly crude. Mine has four (4) fuses. I took out the radio - couldn't hear it anyway and why leave thief bait in place? But they're a blast to drive on a nice day. The heaters DO work well - they're oversized for this car's interior - but the top will leak like crazy. And if you're anyplace south of, say, Canada, you'll roast in the summer.

Keep in mind these cars are essentially 1960 technology and earlier - bog simple but do take maintenance like greasing suspension points, oil in the carb (used for damping), etc. The '75-'70 models have a Triumph 1500 cc engine that's a bit notorious for having weak rod bearings and crankshaft thrust bearings. As the car was not designed for this engine it's a snug fit in the engine compartment; having said that there is plenty of support available on line and in the way of parts, most of which are not expensive by German-car standards.

Frankly if I were going to DD one I'd look for a '74 and earlier chrome bumper model with the 1275cc engine in it. There's a guy around here who DDs a '66...here being Raleigh/Durham NC area.
